Primary Pericardial Mesothelioma and a Case Report
Authors
Abstract:
We have studied a case of intractable congestive heart failure who died and her autopsy revealed a pericardial mesothelioma and left atrial myxoma. The mesothelioma was huge;much larger than the heart. Histological examination of the mesothelioma showed a mixed fibre-epithelial patern, with areas of myxoid changes. Since it is a rare tumor we have reviewed the literature on the pericardial tumors and have outlined the characteristics of pericardial mesothelioma.

PRIMARY MALIGNANT PERICARDIAL MESOTHELIOMA
Primary malignant neoplasms of the pericardium are rare and are predominantly mesotheliomas, followed by benign localized fibrous mesothelioma, malignant fibrosarcoma, angiosarcoma and benign and malignant teratomas. 1 This article concerns an atypical presentation of this malignant tumor with symptoms and signs of pericardial effusion. This unusual feature was complete encasement of the h...

A 19 year old man presented with a six month history of chest pain, dyspnoea, and lethargy and was found on an echocardiogram to have a dilated left ventricle with a small pericardial effusion. Ramipril and a course of steroids were tried but serial echocardiograms showed a persistently thickened pericardium and slowly developing features of constriction. On computed tomography, a large mediast...

full textPrimary Pericardial Mesothelioma: Report of a Patient and Literature Review
Primary mesothelioma of the pericardium is a rare tumor and carries a dismal prognosis. This case report presents a 38-year-old man who suffered from recurrent pericardial fluid. Initial symptoms were unspecific, with dry cough and progressing fatigue. Pericardiocentesis was performed, but analyses for malignant cells and tuberculosis were negative. After recurrence a pericardiectomy was planne...

full textPrimary Malignant Pericardial Mesothelioma
Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma is an extremely rare tumour. One of the largest autopsy series including about 500,000 cases gave an incidence of primary pericardial tumours of <0.0022% (Gossinger et al., 1998). However, it accounts for approximately 2-3% of all cardiac and pericardial primary tumours being the third tumour after angiosarcoma and rhabdomiosarcoma (Karadzic et al., 20...
